WILLIAMSBURG NEIGHBORHOOD NURSERY SCHOOL

PROGRAM: Nursery School IN MIXED-USE LOFT BUILDING

STATUS: Completed 2013

SIZE: 3,500 SF

After ten years operating out of a church, our client, a not-for-profit preschool for two to four year olds, was finally able to design a new space of their own. The Williamsburg Neighborhood Nursery School wanted a bright space devoid of visual noise to be a backdrop for student work and they did not have much to spend on their renovation. The limited budget did not limit the design. We creatively detailed inexpensive materials and fixtures; a stainless steel sink was partially hand-painted, low cost light fixtures were arranged in bold patterns, and poplar wood was used for paneling instead of a more expensive species. When the school realized they couldn’t afford to have their preferred cork floor everywhere, we limited its use to areas which became reading zones in classrooms. Since the building was previously a factory, our scope also included necessary city filings and building system upgrades to convert the building to a school, as well as creating an efficient layout to accommodate the maximum number of students and effective circulation throughout the space.
