New Maribor

NEW MARIBOR ART GALLERY DESIGN COMPETITION

LOCATION: Maribor, Slovenia

PROGRAM: Design Competition

STATUS: Proposed 2009

Our competition entry for a new museum in Maribor, Slovenia calls for a deep plinth that sank 1-½ stories down and rose the same distance up, forming cavernous exhibition space for large installations on the inside and a grand staircase from the riverfront up to a public plaza on the outside. Three trapezoidal volumes sit atop the plinth containing more exhibition space and museum administrative, curatorial, and educational spaces. The building envelope is conceived as a rainscreen made up of concave porcelain tiles that are fitted with photovoltaic cells and glazed to reflect the typical terra cotta tile roofs of the city surrounding the museum site.

1. 4000 m2 exhibition space on one floor.

2. Solution A: Exhibition space raised to allow outdoor space and access to other program. Problem: outdoor space is shaded.

3. Solution B: Exhibition space submerged. Roof becomes inhabitable plinth. Other program above.

4. The plinth is carved to allow access from new waterfront and from parking to a central courtyard where all program is accessed.
