Known for its high quality mattresses sold out of a three-generation ramshackle outpost on the Upper West Side, we assisted in the move to a larger home across town. The problem of displaying mattresses is that they are big, and Longs has a lot to choose from. A sea of beds is not a pretty sight, and has a scale that is not conducive to retail. Our solution was to create a store within a store, a bright island in a sea of beds where sales staff could greet customers and where smaller items like pillows and linens could be displayed. The island is set back from the street, to allow the beds to be displayed in the window and the store within a store is wrapped in a supergraphic taken from the ticking of Long’s namesake mattresses.
