For this project, we embraced the challenge of how to connect five existing apartments that were originally studio, 1- and 2-bedroom apartments into a cohesive urban living space for a family of five and visiting relatives. The layout placed the primary suite, and the living, dining, and kitchen across the front of the apartment, with three kids’ rooms and adjoining bathrooms at the back, while a playroom den and guest bedroom were situated in the furthest end of the plan. Since the wood floors had continuously been damaged by leaks in the building, we used large slabs of moisture resistant stone to cover the floors throughout. New millwork storage included custom cabinetry in American Black Walnut, blackened aluminum, and polished stainless steel. Custom sinks and vanities are made to fit into small bathrooms that couldn’t be expanded due to the building's wet over dry rules. Each child selected a faucet color for their bathroom. Existing concrete columns of the building that were previously hidden behind walls were exposed and refinished. New electrical service, AV systems, and lighting were integrated into this full-gut renovation.
